According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. imported over $311.7 million of fireworks from China in 2015, accounting for nearly 96% of all the fireworks the nation imported that year.

Computer chipmaker Intel has a different idea for how to light up the night sky in celebration: replace all those millions worth of non-reusable exploding fireworks with formation flying drones.

Here's how that future is being made possible:
